Work-life balance: Learn from my experience

When I first joined office, I thought that my whole life would be spent in work. Waking up early in the morning, traffic, meetings and emails – by the end of the day I would be so tired that I would not have any time for myself.
Gradually I learnt that balance between work and personal life is very important. This keeps both mind and body healthy.
Let me tell you some of my personal experiences and easy tips which made my life better.
1. Make your morning start easier

Earlier, as soon as I woke up, I used to grab my phone and check social media and emails. This would drain my day’s energy quickly.
Now I meditate or do light stretching for 10–15 minutes in the morning . This gives me a positive start to the day and helps me stay focused throughout the day.
Tips:
- Drink water as soon as you wake up in the morning.
- Do light stretching or yoga.
- Open mobile and email after some time.
2. Take short breaks between work

Earlier I used to think that taking breaks would delay the work. But I have seen that taking breaks helps in getting the work done quickly and efficiently.
Now I take a 5 minute break after working for 25–30 minutes. During this time, looking out of the window, taking a short walk or drinking water is very relaxing.
Tips:
- Adopt 25 min work + 5 min break (Pomodoro).
- Use mobile phone less during breaks.
- Do some light stretching or a little walking.
3. Set limits between office and home
Tips:
Set up email auto-replies if needed.
Keep office and home time separate.
After coming home, concentrate only on personal matters.

Earlier, the stress of office used to come with me as soon as I reached home. Phone notifications, emails – everything used to go round in my mind.
Now I decide not to open work emails after 7 pm. This allows me to spend time with family and friends and stay mentally refreshed.
4. Healthy food and water

Tips:
Have small healthy snacks in between.
Have a light and balanced lunch.
Keep drinking water throughout the day.
Earlier, I used to eat junk food in a hurry and drink less water. This used to make me feel tired throughout the day and I was unable to concentrate.
Now I pack healthy snacks and lunch from home and drink water several times a day. This increases both energy and concentration.
5. Mindfulness and stress management

Earlier, the stress of work used to be very high. Meetings, deadlines, office politics – all together increased fatigue and anxiety.
Now I practice meditation or deep breathing for 5–10 minutes every day. This keeps the mind calm and improves focus.
Tips:
- Meditate every morning or evening.
- Take short breaks when you feel stressed.
- Listen to your favorite music and relax.
6. Prioritize your work

Tips:
Do big work by dividing it into smaller parts.
Divide tasks into important and less important.
Make a plan at the beginning of the day.
Earlier I used to try to do everything at once. This increased stress and the work felt incomplete.
Now I do the important tasks first and the smaller tasks later. This increases satisfaction and mental peace during the day.
7. Maintain social connections
Tips:
Seek professional help if needed.
Spend time with close people.
Be helpful and positive in the office.

Earlier, due to being busy with work, I had become distant from friends and family. This increased loneliness and stress.
Now I meet or call my close ones 2–3 times a week. This has led to increased happiness and mental energy, and better relationships at work as well.
It is not difficult to balance your desk and personal life. By adopting some changes and good habits, we can stay happy and fit .
Take short breaks, eat healthy, be mindful, manage time and stay connected with family and friends. This can make life better at both work and home.
